        "Courier" Theft Scam

[Beware of criminals posing as 'officials']

Retailers are warned to beware of being conned into allowing so-called "couriers", to collect parcels after being delivered.
A group of men impersonating couriers, are targeting retailers shortly after they have taken receipt of parcels.
These criminals who are dressed in familiar courier garb, will claim that some of the items that were delivered needed to be returned to their company, while citing various reasons.
Unbeknownst to the shop assistant, he or she will generally believe that there was a delivery fault and comply with the request, thereafter allowing the "courier" to take some of the delivered parcels away.
Only afterwards will it be established that it was a scam, and that the actual courier company has no knowledge of the return.

How to identify fake couriers:

[deliveryperson]

  * Ensure that they are attired in branded uniform
  * ALWAYS ask for Identification if he/she is not your regular courier person
  * Ensure relevant documentation is in order
  * Body Language (will appear nervous and in a hurry)

Steps you can take to avoid being scammed:

  * Remember, the recall of goods delivered is always prearranged.
  * Shop assistant to notify shop owners of the return request
  * Contact the courier company and confirm the return
  * Ask for their supervisor's landline number to check their credentials
  *   Request identification of courier
  * Request to see the return documentation, e.g. Credit Note, etc.
  * Make sure the documentation represents your courier company
  * Obtain copies of all documentation
  * Confirm the documentation with the courier company
  * Avoid allowing returns to take place without prior communication either telephonically or per e-mail
  * Contact on site security immediately to assess the situation
  *   Never leave them unattended

This new crime epidemic is taking place countrywide, and retailers have been scammed this way as these criminals are exceptionally convincing.
Use the above steps to create your own procedures in your work place so as to avoid being scammed.
Ensure that your Staff are well versed and understand these procedures.
Ensure that your parcels are insured.

Retailers are warned never to allow returns to take place without proper confirmation - trust your instincts - in case of doubt, do NOT hand over any goods to them.
Be safe! Not sorry!
