Background

It is a constant struggle to keep blood stocks at high enough level to ensure that all the processes relating to the testing and processing of the blood are managed optimally.  In order to do this a 4 – 5 day group O blood supply is critical.  Capacity is often a problem and the operations team has identified Human Rights Day as a day when they have enough resources to cope with the high influx of donors.  We have achieved similar results on days like Mandela Day and World Blood Donor Day but what we have seen is that despite the high collections, regular donors who would normally have donated at other venues on other days end up donating at the big events thus creating a problem down the line.

Target Market

Primary: New Donors. People who have never donated blood and have the potential to donate. We need to encourage them to start donating.

Secondary: Lapsed Donors. People who used to donate blood but have not donated for a period of 12 months or longer.  We want these people to start donating again.

Tertiary: Regular Donors. These are people who regularly donate but we want to target them to bring people, who have lapsed or who have never donated before, with them when they donate.

What is the idea?

SANBS will go on a national through the line media drive to encourage South Africans to donate blood on 21 March and beyond.  The day needs to place emphasis on the need for donation, the customer experience and the importance of donating blood regularly.  We would also like to use the day to generate leads for locations for more sustainable and accessible blood drives for the new donors which we will attract with this initiative.

What is the main purpose?

The main purpose on the day is to encourage people to donate blood for the first time and to encourage those who do not donate anymore to start donating again.

What is the goal?

To collect 4500 units of blood on one day
