[Evergreen Muizenberg] Muizenberg Evergreen Covid-19 update.

        Dear Resident,

I trust that you have enjoyed the last bit of summer rays on this magnificent Sunday.

Following communications earlier this week where we informed you of a resident in Frail care that tested positive for Covid-19 I wish to further update now on the actions taken thus far.
It is always our intention to remain transparent with residents and family members.

To date we have conducted 125 COVID-19 tests, made up of all Care Centre residents, all healthcare staff in Frailcare and in the clinic, Western province catering staff and Evergreen staff, we have 16 results still outstanding.
We have an excellent relationship with Ampath laboratories and they have been excellent in delivering speedy results. We continue to retest staff and residents on an ongoing basis

The updated results of our tests are as follow:

  *   2 Care Centre residents have tested positive, as previously conveyed the one resident was transferred to a nearby hospital, is in ICU and doing well under the circumstances.

We remain in contact with the hospital and his doctor on a daily basis. The other resident remains isolated in our Care Centre and is asymptomatic.

He is being cared for in isolation and full barrier nursing has been implemented.

  *   10 healthcare staff all working in the Care Centre have tested positive. As per the Western Cape governments protocol COVID-19 positive persons are to go home to isolate,

should their home have sufficient space and they do not have extended family in the house. The first choice is to go to a provincial facility to be quarantined or be admitted to hospital if life threatening.

As you can imagine it is an extremely emotional process to go through, many of our carers are scared, nervous and concerned. It is important to note that nobody has displayed any symptoms of COVID-19

  *   1 Evergreen staff member at reception tested positive. She is self-isolating at home. All her colleagues have tested negative and will continue to be monitored and retested.

  *   1 Unique Health laundry attendant has also tested positive. She is self-isolating at home.

Our prayers and wishes for a full recovery go out to every one of these staff members. Also, to their families who must also be traumatised knowing their family member has contracted the virus.
Over 95% of all persons who have contracted the virus are projected to fully recover.

The only way to track this virus is to continuously test, isolate and retest.  We have contracted with a deep cleaning fumigation company that has been in the village 3 times to fumigate Lifestyle centre and public areas,
staff facilities and main kitchen, frail care and houses that our staff have been living in. They are extremely professional and the services delivered have been a great help to our ongoing sanitizing and cleaning regime.

There has been a video 'clip' doing the rounds on social media which has caused some concern amongst you and your families. This is fully understandable.

Unfortunately, we cannot always keep ahead of social media and control what is portrayed. We have responded and dealt with it appropriately and can assure you that our staff wellbeing is extremely important to us.

We will continue to update you as we proceed with retesting and as the situation changes. Please be assure that we are doing everything in our ability to stop the spread of the virus and to protect our residents and staff against it.

We once again appeal to all residents to follow social distancing rules at all times when outside their homes, wear a face mask, sanitize your hands after you were in the elevator,

or after you touched a hand railing, and keep your distance from other residents and staff to at least 2 meters.

I would like to personally thank Elize, Melanie and Lee for their support on the healthcare front and for the extra-long hours they have worked to perform so many tests.
