COVID-19 - Moving to Level 2 - 18 August 2020

As South Africa moves from Level 3 to Level 2 of the national lockdown, President Cyril Ramaphosa urges all citizens to remain vigilant as they are still very much in the middle of this deadly pandemic. There is always a chance of the resurgence of the coronavirus, that has to date placed South Africa with the fifth highest number of infections in the world, which to date has claimed 11000 lives and which has infected more than half a million people in South Africa.

"It is a wake-up call to many among us who may harbour illusions that we are even close to seeing the end of this grave public health emergency. This pandemic is a matter of life and death and we need to adapt and we need to remain vigilant - the greatest risk to our country is complacency as this would also bring about an increased risk of transmission" said Ramaphosa in his address to the nation announcing the move from Level 3 to level 2.

"Many countries who have relaxed their policies and lifted restrictions have experienced a "second wave" of infections and that could happen here too. Ä second wave of COVID-19 should be expected within the next 8-12 weeks. It is a warning that the fight against the coronavirus is far from over," said the South African Medical Association's chairperson, Dr Angelique Coetzee.

President Ramaphosa said that "'It may be that as we are now permitted to meet friends and family, to visit entertainment venues and to travel for leisure, consume alcohol in restaurants, bars and taverns, but as the old adage goes, just because you can, doesn't mean you should."

The President has appealed to people to be careful when visiting relatives, especially the elderly and those with pre-existing medical conditions

"We need to be aware that the threat is ever-present. We need to ensure that infections continue to decline." said Professor Salim Abdool Karim, chairperson of the COVID-19 ministerial advisory committee. He's urging South Africans to continue practising strict measures to prevent infection.

I wish to congratulate all our residents for having helped to keep our village coronavirus free and appeal to them to do everything in their power to maintain the status quo.

As the country moves to level 2 of lockdown from Tuesday 17 August, 2020, the guidelines below will be implemented in our Evergreen Bergvliet village with immediate effect:

·      Family members and close friends may enter the village to visit residents in their homes.

·      All visitors will have to be screened at the clinic health station, located in the clubhouse. Visitors will have their temperatures recorded as well as be sanitised and will need to provide contact details. This is to ensure we have accurate traceability in the event of infection. We strongly recommend that visitors keep their masks on at all times and that even in your homes you maintain the 2-meter distancing protocol. We recommend that only four visitors enter/visit your home at any one time. (No one under the age of 18 will be allowed access.)

·      All visitors must wear three-ply cloth masks at ALL times and remember to wash your hands and sanitise regularly.

·      Service providers must report to the guardhouse where they will be screened. They will have their temperatures recorded as well as be sanitised and will also need to provide contact details. Please advise reception of any appointments that are made.

·      The Bistro will be open from 8am-5pm for tea/coffee, cake and light meals from Monday, 24 August.

·      The Gym will be open all day. It is important to book your time slot. Only two people will be allowed to use the gym at a time. Please take your own sanitiser, cloth, hand towel and water bottle. Please sanitise/wipe down the equipment used for the next person, once your session is finished.
The following will be implemented from 01 September:

·      Domestic workers and private gardeners will be allowed to return to work. They must report to the security guardhouse, provide their ID books (if they haven't already) to be signed in and they will have their temperatures recorded as well as be sanitised and will also need to provide contact details. They must wear three-ply cloth masks at ALL times. We suggest that they do not work in the same area/space occupied by residents and that a 2-meter social distance is maintained. A protective face mask should be worn by the resident at all times whilst the service is underway.

·      The swimming pool will be opened on 01 September. Only one resident to have access to the pool at a time. Please book your time slot with reception.

·      Special events and entertainment will be planned for residents. Details to follow.

·      Catering and functions/socials will be operational from 01 September. Details to follow.

·      The common area gardens will be serviced once a week by Whitecliffs
The social distancing and hygiene measures that are in place under the lockdown will continue for some time into the future and cannot be abandoned or compromised. It will become a way of life and managing the coronavirus as a constant in our daily lives may, in many respects, be more difficult. It has been a tough and gruelling five months.

This contagious virus demands vigilance and it will continue to demand sacrifices of us all. However, I am very grateful to each and every one of you for being on board with the preventative measures that Management introduced since we implemented our lock down earlier this year
