With sustainability being the word du jour for businesses that are striving to prevent the depletion of natural and/or physical resources by maintaining and supporting processes continuously over time; there is a responsibility to be able to deliver on these sustainability objectives. Melrose Arch is able to demonstrate these processes in action within the precinct, and this month sees the official launch of “SustainABLE at Melrose Arch,” showcasing the efforts and results that prove the precinct’s continued success in this space.

In today's business landscape, sustainability has become a driving force for growth and development, and as organisations become more environmentally conscious, they seek products, places and services that align with these values. Melrose Arch presents a unique opportunity for companies to capitalise on sustainable investing, with a precinct that is setting the standards for sustainability.

As South Africa migrates to an off-grid economy, the precinct boasts a thriving rooftop solar system, waste separating facility, underground cooling plant and wet waste recycling program, providing its hotels, businesses, restaurants and residential properties with an unparalleled experience.

In 2001, Melrose Arch opened with a limited facility, with phase 1 consisting of only 11 buildings, but has since expanded to house 106 000m2 office space, 39 000m2 retail space, 17 000m2 hotel space, 29 000m2 of residential and conferencing space, and 8600m2 accommodating health clubs. The integration of sustainability operations has expanded parallel to the 199 600m2, with the result of seamless integration.

With an uninterrupted supply of power and water being the two greatest challenges in the country at the moment, Melrose Arch has created sustainable solutions for both resources, and the precinct’s rooftop solar system is intricately accommodated across 16 different roof surfaces. Currently featuring 7,811 solar panels and multiple inverters, generating approximately 3.2MW of clean energy annually, the grid-tied system integrates with multiple generators during load- shedding.

In addition, the precinct has two sources of underground water. Through its water treatment plant, water is filtered and cleansed before being converted to potable water. This water is channelled to standby tanks, which are in place to enable the precinct to continue to enjoy water when there are interruptions to the local supply.

This system keeps the precinct’s gardens green throughout the year and ensures that less water is wasted. Last year alone, the precinct saved 3,500,000 litres of water in this way. The precinct also has a water back-up system with sufficient supply to keep operations flowing for up to 72 hours at any given time.

When it comes to sustainable dining, Melrose Arch has introduced a comprehensive wet waste recycling program for all restaurants, which aims to address the pressing issue of food waste and added waste to landfill, by promoting environmental responsibility and sustainable practices.

Melrose Arch’s waste separating facility, that operates 24/7 separates paper, cardboard, metals, plastics and glass, and sends these for recycling. At the property’s approximately 30 restaurants, cafés and bars on the precinct, food waste is separated at source i.e., in the restaurant kitchens.

Partnering with Urban Farms and Don’t Waste to implement efficient waste separation methods and commitment, the precinct allows each restaurant to divert food waste from traditional waste streams. By separating wet waste at source, restaurants can ensure proper recycling and processing, transforming it into valuable resources such as compost. Through this program, from collection to compost creation, the precinct not only reduces the precinct’s environmental impact, but also inspires other businesses in the industry to take action.
