The Melrose Arch retail tenant mix has been successfully enhanced with sought-after brands such as Starbucks, Sally Williams, Skechers, Paul, Jamie's Italian, Ciao - The Little Eatery, Eyeconik, Body20, The Laser Beautique, Indian Motorcycle, Luxity, Sushi Burrito, Sorbet Man, The Grillhouse, Huawei, Standard Bank  while others are boasting a fresh, new look following their recent refurbishments: Sorbet, Ocean Basket, Moyo, MTN Cosmonet, FNB, Nicci Boutique and Orient. F) SECURITY

There are two security concerns affecting retail:
Fraud - card-related
Theft - items left on counter

CARD FRAUD
There is a wide range of methods used to commit fraud in South Africa, with ever-changing methods, but the most common types of card fraud are:
Counterfeit card
Lost or stolen card (the most common method)
False application fraud
Card not present

With a lost or stolen card, the standard modus operandi occurs when someone purchases an unusual amount of clothing at one store.
When the card is presented, the customer will try to distract the shop assistant to avoid detection.

When handling a debit/credit card, take note of the following:
Type of card - Is it a local or international card? (A local person shopping with a Diners Club card is cause for suspicion.)
Misrepresentation - In many cases, the shopper presenting the card has a different name to that printed on the card, or the details on the card don't correspond to
the person presenting the card, for example, 'Miss A Smith' when a man is presenting the card.
Signature - The signature on the card does not match the signature of the shopper.
When in doubt, always ask for a second opinion, and ask for identification when the purchase amount is unusually high. Rather be safe than sorry.

THEFT
Theft often occurs when the store has a small counter as point of sale. Shop assistants often keep personal items like handbags, vehicle keys, tablets and cellphones,
etc behind the counter or, in some cases, on top of the counter, which presents an opportunity for theft.

With theft, the standard modus operandi is as follows: Two or more 'customers' will walk in, start looking around and once they have established a possibility, they will split up.
One person will distract the shop assistant to an area out of view of the counter while another person steals the item/s from the counter.
Once the item has been stolen, the thief will slip out of the store, normally unseen, and walk away or hand over the items to a third suspect, who quickly disappears.
This happens in a very short space of time.

To avoid becoming a victim of theft:
Never leave personal/expensive/electronic equipment on the counter
When assisting more than one customer, try to position yourself in such a way that you can see everyone in the shop
Try not to be alone in the shop
It is not unusual for suspects to carry large bags with them, wear sunglasses or pretend to be talking on their cellphones, so pay attention to these customers
You will be asked to assist with an unusual task that will divert your attention away from the counter, allowing the suspects to steal the items.

Make friends with neighbouring shop owners and managers and should you find yourself alone, ask your neighbour to assist. If you feel uncomfortable about a situation,
press the silent panic button, which will alert security who will respond.

It is unlikely that a suspect will operate alone. Most of the time, they operate in groups of two or more. These suspects are generally very friendly and will do their best to distract you.
Women in particular will carry big bags, some will wear hats or sunglasses and, in many cases, a suspect will pretend to be busy on his cellphone, talking loudly and pacing up and down.

General signs of a suspect:

  *   Nervous - sweaty, looking around the whole time, hands shaking and hesitant tone of voice
  *   Appears overfriendly
