What’s happening this week & next: 25 November to 5 December

I was thinking at the end of last week how 'time is flying', it seems that you start a week and before you know it is Thursday and almost week-end again. I decided to do some reading on the subject. It has long been a topic of conversation and almost as popular as discussing the weather….

There are various theories about why the years seem to pass quicker as we get older. The most popular is also the most obvious. As you get older, each year is a smaller percentage of your life. If you are 10 years old, a year is 10 percent. If you are 50 years old, a year is two percent.

But this theory has been termed as 'too simple' and another one, perhaps more accurate proposed. This theory states that time passes faster when we are in a set routine, when we aren't learning anything new, when we stay stuck in a life pattern. The key to making time slow down is to have new experiences. You may joke that the week you went on vacation flew by far too quickly, but if you stop and think about it, that week actually seemed to last much longer than one involving the drudgery of your normal day. You are complaining about it going away so fast because you loved it, not because it felt as though time was passing faster.

If you want to slow down time, this theory holds: If you want to make the days last, do something different.

This makes perfect sense. When we're young, we have plenty of firsts. First day of school. First day of the long holidays. First date. First kiss. First real relationship. First terrible breakup. First real job. First...you get the point. When we're young, life is full of firsts. Time seems to pass more slowly because everything about those moment is fresh and new. But you can't have a lifetime of firsts……..at least not meaningful firsts.

So, to make time 'last longer', don't just float through life. Do different things as often as you can. Learn something new. Try something new. Go somewhere new. Push yourself. Set a goal, even a silly goal, and work to achieve it.

No matter how old you are, your life can still involve the occasional first. When it does, the passage of time will slow dramatically. The rate of your experiences and accomplishments will increase dramatically. Since the most precious thing any of us has is time...shouldn't that be your goal?
After all that time saving……don't forget it is still Diabetes Awareness month and we are sponsoring FREE diabetes testing in our clinic on the 1st floor until the end of November. Only after you have tested are you able to make changes and take precautions. The most obvious seems to be a 'change in lifestyle' and this generally is because we are overweight from eating incorrectly. If it is caught early, it can be reversed, and in 90% of cases, IT can BE cured. Go and have yourself tested.
While on health issues, don’t forget Thursday is “Judgement Day”……no not that Judgement Day but rather the judging of the Movember’s. This is a culmination of a month-long campaign of awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate and testicular cancer, mental health and physical inactivity.
Join us on Thursday at 11am at the TV area to hear a talk by CANSA on men’s health, cancer prevention and how “to live with it”. This will be followed by the judging of the best MO and a Boerewors braai. For just R48.00 you get boerewors roll with relish, potato wedges, coleslaw and a beer / glass of wine / soft drink.

Tomorrow, Tuesday at 9 am we have a handover, this time to the SPCA. Belinda Abrahams, SPCA communications office, will be collecting the proceeds from our Annual Evergreen Muizenberg Craft Market. This is a sizeable amount, R4530.00 in cash, a special animal ‘vacuum cleaner’ worth R4000.00 plus toys and food. Those interested please attend the handing over of this donation.

Another appeal, this time for food. Now in its fourth year, we are asking residents to donate foods stuffs for those children that rely on the school, Capricorn Primary School, for their daily meals. With the school closed for the holidays the one decent meal per day is now not available. The aim is to feed 150 families for the six weeks that the school is closed. A box has been placed in the foyer with a list of the recommended food for you to put your donation in. No matter how small and insignificant you might think something is, anything will help. A BIG thank you to those of you who have already donated. The food will be collected on Friday, 29 November.

We would like to wish the following residents a very Happy Birthday:

A special wish to Wynter Provost who is turning 98 on 4 December, many happy returns Sir, may you have many many more. Also to Hendrina Kilian, one of our new residents, who is turning 87 on the same day, 185 years of experience on one day!!

Coming up in the next two weeks:-

  *   The Movie on Wednesday is the very entertaining Gloria Bell, starring the Oscar winning actress Julianne Moore. Gloria Bell was released last year.

Synopsis - A free-spirited divorcee spends her nights on the dance floor, joyfully letting loose at clubs around Los Angeles. She soon finds herself thrust into an unexpected new romance, filled with the joys of budding love and the complications of dating. One night, she meets Arnold, a divorcee like herself, and the two hit it off. They begin a relationship not long after. However, Gloria is annoyed after Arnold reveals that he still financially supports his ex-wife and two daughters, the latter of which are unemployed and make incessant demands of him. Will tell you no more……..attend

  *   Tomorrow, Tuesday, there is a Social gathering organised by Hydle De Villiers, come together and gather in the Lifestyle Centre at 2.30 pm. Cost is R50.00 which will give you a variety of savoury and sweet eats, tea/coffee. It is just a good ol’ get together, chat and meet new and old friends. You are also welcome to bring your own alcoholic beverage. Please RSVP to Hydle in apartment 236, ext. 2236.

  *   The Evergreen Group sponsored Cape Veterans T20 Cricket League will again take place this week.

  *   Wednesday 27th November – Rondebosch Cricket Club at 16h00. Rondebosch vs Fish Hoek.

Let us know if you would like to attend, Bronwyn our Hospitality Manager will be at the games to meet and greet you and we will supply a drinks voucher for you to enjoy on the day. There are clubhouse facilities where residents can purchase drinks and food.

  *   On Thursday 28th November at 3.00 pm sharp we welcome back Jim Raubenheimers Evergreen wine club. This time Jim is featuring a range of Perdeberg wines. Perdeberg winery is situated in the shadows of the Paardeberg Mountain near Paarl, established in 1941, it has always been known for good quality wines at a very good price. Cost R15.00, please book and pay at reception.

  *   Don’t forget the ever popular Month End Madness Fish / Calamari & Chips for R50.00, this normally sells for R62.00 on Friday 29th  November. Please book at the Bistro by dialling 2253.
  *   The culmination of a year’s photography entries come together on next Tuesday 3 December at 4 pm. A presentation with awards will take place with the winners being revealed in each category. All those who sent in entries and keen photographers welcome.

  *   The last Bingo of the year will be on Thursday, 5 December. It promises to be a bumper one, with more prizes and cards than normal. A nominal fee of R30.00 is payable. Please book by Wednesday, the day before and pay at reception. All welcome……we encourage our new residents to join for a great evening. Bingo advertised for Thursday this week has been cancelled.
  *   Time to be merry and bright…Join us on Sunday 8 December for our own Christmas Choir Concert at 15h00 in the Bistro Lounge. A yearly event not to be missed.
   Forthcoming events:

  *   Don’t forget to book for our Christmas Dinner / Year End Dinner, this year it will be held on Wednesday 11 December at 6 pm. Costs only R148.00, which includes a three course menu, live entertainment and a DJ for “dancing the night away”, a great deal. Please find menu attached. Book by 6 December at the Bistro counter.

  *   “Watch the press” for details of our Christmas lunch and our News Year’s Eve Bash featuring DJ Captain John Morgan.
  Village General

  *   Remember that the City of Cape Town grants a rates rebate for those residents on a pension or social grant. Those of you who earn a household income of less than R 17 500 are eligible to receive a rebate of up to 100% of your rates. You are encouraged to apply, don’t delay, close off date is 30 November. Reception will print the forms for you and David Rosenberg, apartment 115, has kindly offered to assist anyone who might need help in completing the forms.

  *   Thanks to the “Greenies” we have had two fully organic “harvests” from our veg & herb pallets. Thanks again to those who have volunteered. I’m sure those of you who have taken advantage of the harvest can back this up. There is lots more to come.

  *   Thank you to those who have volunteered, however we need many more. Another big shout out to all residents to be “Evacuation Marshals”. We need six marshals on each apartment floor and six marshals for the houses. You will be trained into exactly what you are required to do. We will be holding a meeting with each group.

  *   A reminder to please let the office know when you leave and when you return to the village for any medical procedures. We do not always know when you leave the village, it is vitally important, not only from a safety point of view but also from a medical and healthcare point. We need to know what transpired so we are able to put a healthcare plan together.
