Eid Mubarak. We would like to wish our Muslim friends a joyous Eid.

CHRISTINA'S BACK

It’s been five years since we were privileged to hear Christina Brabetz. Details of her concert are at the end of the newsletter; the monumental 10th Symphony by Shostakovich with an augmented orchestra of 75 musicians is made possible by private sponsorship by a concertgoer in memory of her late husband. The Shostakovich Symphony was written seventy years ago, over the month of April.

Read on WeekendSpecial what Christina has been up to and why she is happy to be back:

This is what a full house looks like, and last week’s Brahms was a great way to get back to normal!

Some points to remember:

· The concert begins at 19:30
· The pre-concert talk by Albert Combrink begins at 18:45
· There is free parking on the Grand Parade with entry from the Castle side only and after about 18:30 the Corporation Street side
· CCID will patrol the area and the CPO’s dog patrol and other security will be on duty
· The City Hall does have a generator so loadshedding won’t affect the concert
· Dress rehearsal tickets are available at Quicket. Rehearsals are at 11 on concert days.
· Peter Kramer will sell CDs and DVDs at both rehearsal and concerts

Four young Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra musicians have been awarded the Alexander International Music Award for Emerging Musicians. This cultural exchange between musicians of the CPO and the junge norddeutsche philharmonie (jnp) was established by German entrepreneur and philanthropist Alexander Valentin.

The musicians who auditioned successfully are Nicci Botha (violin, 19, of Pinelands), Ashlin Grobbelaar, (cello, 24 of Mowbray), Chad Groepies, (trumpet, 25, of Mitchell’s Plain), and Sigwibo “Gibbs” Tokwe (bassoon, 22 of Gqeberha but in UCT residence in Claremont). All are members of the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and students at UCT, and all perform as ad hoc musicians with the CPO. After auditions open to all in the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, they were selected to attend the jnp summer camp in Germany in August. Next March, four young jnp musicians will join the CPO in a concert as part of the exchange.

Marlene Schleicher, managing director of the jnp, who visited South Africa in February to meet the youth orchestra, was delighted by the calibre of its players.

“After listening to the audition tapes, we had no hesitation in inviting these four young people who will blend in so well with the musicians of the jnp who are without question some of the best young players in Germany. We look forward to an excellent summer camp and concerts.”

As part of its goals to teach and provide performance opportunities to young learners in the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra’s grassroots and mother-tongue Masidlale training project, the CPO is delighted to partner with Gateway Primary School in Delft to give a concert on Saturday, April 29, at 13:00 at the Breakthrough Ministries International Church (Delft).

Nolizwi Monica Dadase, the CPO’s youth development co-ordinator says that Gateway Primary is one of the schools at which a Masidlale programme is very active, and the school wants to raise money to buy instruments and expand the programme.

“There is a strong minstrel heritage in the area, and we would like to assist in growing the interest in brass and strings instruments to provide more youngsters with the chance to increase their knowledge and musical skills. There is no doubt that mastering an instrument and performing in public adds so much to self-esteem and self-worth,” she says.

PRE-CONCERT TALKS

We are thrilled at the numbers coming to our pre-concert talks and apologize that many had to sit on the floor! Beginning on May 4, we will be moving the venue one floor up which means you can take the lift to get there! Then the upstairs bar can also move into the vacated space! The full access details will be in the next newsletter.
This week’s talk will be by Albert Combrink. Albert will also give the talk on May 4 and John Woodland on May 11.

In the days before Covid, in fact more than 20 years before, flowers for female artists were always provided generously by Avril Petro of Av’s Gifts and Flowers, and we are delighted to say that Avril is back on board. She donated the beautiful bouquets being presented to Christina Brabetz (April 20) and Veriko Tchumburidze (May 4) with love and flair.

Avril has been in the business sine 1983, soon after she discovered she had a talent to make brides’ dreams come true with her wedding arrangements. She began to move beyond weddings and was soon making corporate functions and high-profile events spectacular. This was despite bringing up a family which includes Alexis Petro Matsimela, a flautist who was in the CPO family and is now a music teacher at Parklands College. She has made a huge impact in her community, not only with the CPO. For Avril, floristry is not just a job but a way of life and she takes great pride in her creations, constantly seeking more creativity.

A PERCUSSIONIST MAKES A PLAN

Eugene Trofimczyk, the CPO’s principal percussion, is nothing if not creative and attentive to detail, which also requires an understanding of keeping expenditure in a cash-strapped orchestra to the minimum. For the Arvo Pärt piece, Fratres, which was on the programme of the first concert this season, he was required to play the bass drum, and a second percussionist would have been required to play the two claves. Nothing daunted, Eugene fashioned a stand to hold a clave, resembling the hollowed hand used to hold the second clave while striking the first and he managed to play both the brass drum and the claves together.

Then came the Enigma Variations, which close the season on May 11. Elgar wanted, in Variation 3, to emulate the sound effects of a two-piston steamboat which used to sail up and down the Thames. His suggestion was to use two five shilling coins “rolled” on the timpani, coins which were the right size and right weight to give the right sound effect and Eugene has managed to get two such coins, dating from the 1940s. Listen and hear the difference!

Our former principal clarinet, Maria du Toit is on a concert tour of South Africa with her Dutch pianist partner Vera Kooper. Maria has been living in The Netherlands for nearly 10 years now, and has established herself as a clarinettist of note there. She won many awards, and in 2021 formed a duo with Vera Kooper a respected and award-winning Dutch pianist. Together they have recorded several albums and made extensive tours of Europe and Asia. Their concerts here feature music for clarinet and piano by female composers exclusively, and has been well received in The Netherlands. It includes the Suite by South African/British composer Ivy Priaulx Rainier and 'Olorun mi', a piece for solo clarinet by Nigerian composer Grace Oforka. There will be ten concerts in South Africa beginning on May 13. Venues and dates are on the poster.
