Dear Colleague

So long 2022... hello 2022!

Another year has come and (almost) gone, and while it has brought its fair share of ups and downs, we’re confident that there’s plenty to look forward to in the new year. Despite the current economic climate, Evergreen Lifestyle has continued to grow and flourish, welcoming many new Residents into our family during 2022. There are now over 1500 happy retirees living their best lives at our award-winning villages.

This month’s newsletter looks back at some of the significant milestones, proud achievements, and magic moments experienced by Residents during the course of the year.

We’re thrilled that village life has finally returned to the pre-covid status quo, with social gatherings, get-togethers, and braais happening more frequently. Here are some of the highlights of 2022:

Resident Walks
With health and wellness always front of mind at Evergreen, Residents took part in the National Walking Day in April, and enjoyed it so much that they decided to turn it into a more regular event. The 30-strong walking group sets out every month, proudly wearing their Evergreen shirts, led by two eager walkers who carefully plot the routes, culminating in brunch on the village terrace after the walk.

Potjiekos Competition
Bergvliet’s Potjie Competition was very well supported this year. Residents had to enter teams of 4, choose a theme, team name, and team leader. There was a mystery box of ingredients to select from, and teams were allowed to submit a special side dish in order to wow the judges on final presentation.

Mutt Day
With a host of newcomers, the Bergvliet mutts had stiff competition this year, and choosing a winner proved very difficult for the judges. Mutt Day is a firm favourite, offering an opportunity for both Residents and their fur friends to exercise and socialise.

Festive Dinner

Staff Facilities: At Evergreen, we recognise that we are responsible for a community with very particular interests, concerns and needs. For this reason we have recently upgraded our staff facilities to ensure service excellence.

Gym Equipment: Health and fitness play an important role in ensuring a happy and independent retirement. Our active aging philosophy is supported by extensive village-based health and fitness programmes and facilities, which is why we have recently upgraded the equipment in the Evergreen Bergvliet gym.

Ongoing Maintenance and Improvements: Routine maintenance, landscaping and cleaning services continue to be carried out by our friendly, well-trained maintenance teams on site.

Valentine’s Dinner
Love was in the air at Evergreen Muizenberg on Valentine’s Day, with Residents enjoying an evening of live music and a delicious dinner in the company of good friends.

Inter-village Challenge
The inter-village Game Day takes place a couple of times during the year, with a different host village each time. Contestants compete in 8-ball pool, Canasta, and Bridge, with plenty of eager onlookers cheering them on, and a healthy level of good-natured rivalry between the Residents.

Boeredag
This popular event, now in its 5th year, is a celebration of Afrikaans culture, heritage and cuisine. This year, over 80 Residents came to enjoy the traditional fare, and live music courtesy of Fanie en sy orkes.

Routine Maintenance and Improvements: Our friendly maintenance staff and housekeepers ensure that the village is in tip-top shape and the gardens are exquisitely landscaped, clean and well looked after.

Potjie Competition
Noordhoek Residents followed the proud Evergreen tradition of hosting their very own Potjiekos competition – and they ate like kings. Thanks to the expert cooks and “potjie masters”, Residents were spoilt for choice. Potjie Boytjies took home the title for “pot of the year”.

Oktoberfest
Prost! Over 300 Evergreen Residents, along with their families and friends, enjoyed an eye-watering array of traditional German fare and ice cold Devils Peak beers. Traditional plum cake and apple strudel along with several delicacies from our food market ensured a sweet ending to a great event.

Summer Dance
Evergreen Noordhoek celebrated the end of the year in style, allowing special guests to come and experience the Evergreen Lifestyle first hand. There was a chocolate fountain, live band, photo booth and loads of amazing food to choose from. Residents danced the night away, and had so much fun that they’re already asking after the date of the next party.

Landscaping: Evergreen Noordhoek is built on 16 hectares of gently sloping, north-facing land with sweeping mountain and sea views. This year we planted additional endemic Fynbos plants throughout the village to further enhance the beautiful aesthetic.

Mediclinic Consulting Rooms: In an ongoing effort to improve our service and deliver a fully-fledged, world-class healthcare offering, it gives us great pleasure to announce the opening of a boutique Mediclinic Facility early next year. The Facility will operate like a general medical practice, with doctors and specialists available for consultation at set times per week, on a rotational basis.

Planned Redecorating of Homes: Scenic and secure, the Lake Michelle estate is a sanctuary of calm on the South Cape Peninsula. This year, all of the Evergreen homes in Lake Michelle were repainted to give them a fresh new look.

Christmas Market
Val de Vie’s Christmas market is organised and run entirely by Evergreen Residents. This year there were 40 stalls, Evergreen sold home-made Olive Oil and Olives hand-picked from the estate. Hundreds of people attended the market which was a huge success, raising over R27,000 in support of the Ronwe Primary School Creche.

Christmas in July
Evergreen Val de Vie’s "Christmas in July" celebrations have become the stuff of legends. Each year, Residents get to enjoy a mid-year festive celebration with large helping of entertainment and a delicious buffet dinner prepared by Chefs Lyle and Nickel.

Resident Village Walk
The annual Resident’s Village Walk involved a 5km meander through the manicured walkways of the Val de Vie estate, taking walkers past the polo fields and dams. The event was followed by a braai, with lots of chilled wine and beer on hand for the tired and thirsty.

Additional Landscaping: As part of Evergreen’s Partnership for Life promise, we continuously seek to enhance the villages through ongoing improvements to both the built and natural environments. Landscaping forms an integral part of this process. This year we made a concerted effort to improve the landscaping in this beautiful village by enhancing the overall appearance and adding more soft landscaping.

Scheduled Redecoration and Maintenance: In an ongoing effort to maintain the elegance of this magnificent village we carried out routine maintenance on 81 houses, and repainted boundary walls and other elements within the village.

New Cinema Television: The cinema club at Val de Vie Evergreen became so popular that it had to be moved to a much bigger venue. This year Val de Vie residents were treated to a brand new state-of-the-art cinema sized television to improve their entertainment experience.

Year-end Cocktail Evening
Several events have been hosted at this village, but the showstopper has to be the year-end cocktail party. Residents had a fantastic evening and were even treated to a reading of Shakespeare’s poems by Resident John Richards.

Cooking Master Classes
Residents got to cook and share their favourite recipes with fellow villagers, making this one delectable affair. We eagerly await the publication of the Evergreen Broadacres Cook Book early in the new year.

10-Year Celebration
The Evergreen Broadacres village celebrated its 10th birthday this year, and Residents were invited to celebrate with, and pay tribute to those who had been there since day one. This emotional, heart-warming event was a resounding success, confirming what we’ve always believed: that Evergreen villages are happy places where lasting friendships form, and where happy memories are created.

Planned Redecoration and Maintenance: Broadacres houses were recently repainted to match the fresh new look of the luxury suites. The repainting of houses and maintenance is ongoing.

New Cinema Television: Broadacres Residents were also treated to a new state-of-the-art cinema sized Television to take their movie nights to the next level.

The Evergreen developments team have been hard at work expanding the Evergreen portfolio. As per our announcement in December 2021, we have added:

  *   60 hotel-style suites at Evergreen Broadacres in Johannesburg.
  *   96 hotel-style suites and a state-of-the-art lifestyle centre to our Evergreen Noordhoek village.

Evergreen Val de Vie

Construction activity has proceeded at a rapid pace with 90 additional free-standing houses and 200 luxury suites at Val de Vie in the Cape Winelands and 250 brand new luxury suites at Evergreen Sitari in Sitari Country Estate, just outside Somerset West. All are scheduled for completion in 2023.
