IN LOCKDOWN WITH …

We are introducing a new series to tell you where the hearts and minds of our musicians are …. We begin with principal guest conductor Bernhard Gueller, and will follow in the next issue with resident conductor Brandon Phillips and guest conductor Jeremy Silver, and then introduce or reintroduce you to members of the orchestra.

BERNHARD GUELLER

On the point of leaving to take up engagements in Canada and lead a group of Canadian symphony supporters on a Danube cruise from close to Munich to Budapest, it was Covid-19 that put something of a spoke in my wheels. For the first time in decades, I didn’t wake up to the urgency of scores, for as you know conductors plan concerts for years down the line. Initially, lockdown was like a holiday, one I hadn’t had in years, but soon the appalling reality set in. No work for a conductor is no life! But I soon took advantage of my time off and began listening to music I hadn’t had time for in ages. I rediscovered works like Bach’s Matthew Passion, Salome and Elektra and Don GIovanni and the full Ring Cycle and then I rediscovered (in my first language of German) old television series!

Back to music …. A message for the first Covid-19 video the CPO made, ‘conducting’ the Meditation in a second one, and occasional messages of solace for both the newsletters of the CPO and Symphony Nova Scotia, where I am conductor laureate.

Life at home became another division of tasks – one person shopped, the other sterilized the shopping; one cooked, one cleaned up. It was hard to listen to online concerts because it brought back so clearly the vacuum in one’s life. Life became a series of adaptations and on the lighter side I think we have seen every series on Netflix and Showmax worth seeing!

The past year has been sobering. Instead of wondering about future engagements one wonders whether there will be engagements – I have been very happy to conduct the CPO in concerts here in the past months and look forward to more, Covid permitting. Being diabetic like so many others does make me more cautious than most, choosing to stay in rather than live with an increased risk. The new screens at the orchestra make one feel more confident both for the musicians and myself and I am happy that I am able to conduct the last of these current Cyber Symphonies which is being filmed early next month at the Hugo Lambrechts as the Covid numbers continue to drop (touch wood!).

Let’s put the idea of a third wave behind us for now … if life went back to normal this minute, I would hug musicians, my extended family here and take a plane to see my children in the UK after walking on stage without a mask, lifting my baton and bringing you live music again. In the meantime, listen to the Seventh, Eighth and Ninth Symphonies by Bruckner for spiritual and mental upliftment, or the Brahms Requiem and the Bach B minor Mass for consolation. And for intellectual curiosity, the late string quartets by Beethoven, the greatest works ever written for this ensemble.

What the last year has carved on my brain is that I am very grateful for a roof over my head, a view to take the edge of cabin fever, and the fact that the CPO has managed to keep going under incredible odds. Bravi tutti, but especially Louis Heyneman.

YOUTH NEWS

  * Odile on SA String Board
[https://mcusercontent.com/d59531fcd567e469a4f2c6e29/images/d6ba937b-ff10-4dc7-9908-cc7decc47e70.jpg]

Odile Burden, our Education Manager for Masidlale and the Cape Town Philharmonic Music Academy, has been appointed to the board of the non-profit organization, SA Strings. On the advisory board for 2021 representing the Western Cape are CPO guest concertmaster Suzanne Martens and double bass principal Roxane Steffen. Congratulations to Mariechen Meyer, chairperson (and regular CPO ad hoc player) for pulling this all together and we look forward to the next SA Strings Convention in September.

  * Auditions and welcome Erik Albertyn

There are more than 31 auditioning at the end of March for new places in the youth orchestras .. and mentoring of the young applicants by our professional musicians begins this week. Welcome to horn player and former professor at the Nelson Mandela University in PE, Erik Albertyn. Erik is relocating to Cape Town and will collaborate with the CPO and its Music Academy as a consultant, guest teacher and adviser. His first role is to assist and mentor the CPYO’s principal horn, Shannon Thebus. The CPO and Erik have formed an alliance to position the Erik Albertyn Horn Studio under CPO auspices. Erik has just retired, prematurely, and his focus going forward is to create a new generation of horn players. As he says, it’s a homecoming of sorts since he started his professional career in the original CAPAB orchestra in 1984.

  *   Masidlale
Esteemed CPO Music Academy teacher Charlene Bogenhagen is running a three-hour workshop with the Masidlale violin teachers this week. Its geared to helping them consolidate good teaching methods.

THANK YOU, DAVID BLOOMBERG

While missing the sage counsel of David Bloomberg, a member of the CPO Advisory Board, whose passing last year left a huge gap in the lives of many people and organizations, the CPO is delighted to learn that he left a sizeable bequest to the orchestra. Thank you, David, for your lifelong commitment to the arts. You are truly missed.

THE LYNO METHOD HELPS MUSICIANS – THANK YOU

Sunel Visser, a certified LYNO® Practitioner and sister of former CPO ad hoc player Estie Visser Crida, made a very generous offer to CPO musicians for two free LYNO Method treatments. LYNO Method treats and then avoids chronic or recurring injuries caused by, amongst other things, playing an instrument. Here’s how much it has helped some of the musicians:

Brandon Phillips is a total convert and can’t wait for his second session. “I was totally blown away. Within a couple of days I found I was moving much more easily with 70 per cent less pain.” Principal flute Gabriele von Dürckheim is also looking forward to her next sessions … “Some of my issues have already been resolved.”

Violinist Maretha Uys has had five sessions. “Every time I go there, Sunel manages to release my restrictions quicker and more easily. I have been spending most of my life playing violin in an uncomfortable position and hiking regularly and Sunel removes a layer of the problems I have been experiencing each time. This helps to keep away the pain I would normally have after hours of practising. Even when she has removed all the restrictions, I plan to consult Sunel once a month to maintain the good work. She has made a real difference.”

AND TO GERLINDE MOSER

Gerlinde/Remax Living made a welcome donation to the CPO following a small, private concert at the Pepper Club congratulating her husband, Neville van den Berg, on his 80th birthday, The strings principals performed; the concert was followed by a champagne reception. The string principals are from left to right, Philip Martens, Peter Martens, Samantha Durrant, and Petrus Coetzee, and in front with Neville is Roxane Steffen.

A ROUND OF APPLAUSE TO

  * The City Hall and especially Tyrone Africa and his weekend teams … although we were only allowed access to the airconditioned concert hall (even toilets were out of bounds and they were generously provided for the CPO by Grinaker-LTA), we were happy being back in our home to film two of the four Summer Cyber Symphony Series. The renovations are due to be completed by April and they are so extensive and exciting (new bars, new toilets and much more) that we will bring you up to date in an upcoming edition of the newsletter.

OUR THANKS ALSO TO

  * Albert Combrink who gave us five music stands for use in the Masidlale project
  * A family who remains anonymous who donated a beautiful wool suit and dress shirt to a CPYO/CPYWE musician
