Thanks to a ‘top’ fan who donated two hand sanitizer dispensers for use when we get together as we did at Artscape and the Norval this week. We recorded two Mozart wind octets and a wind nonet by Gounod, Petite Symphonie. At the Hugo Lambrechts, Peter Martens recorded the cello part of the Beethoven Triple Concerto arranged for piano, violin and cello – without orchestra – by Carl Reinecke. It’s a production over three continents … Bryan Wallick recorded the piano part in Colorado and Frank Stadler will record the violin part in Austria. They will be broadcast in the KKNK in its Klein Karoo Klassique festival next month.

JORDAN’S GIFT

The buzz around the concert on August 9 featuring gifted violinist Jordan Brooks on the eve of his departure for the UK has just got louder … Le Lude’s owner Nic Barrow has given the CPO a magnum of 2012 Le Lude Cap Classique valued at R1840  to raffle in aid of his scholarship fund.

“We are exceptionally proud of this talented young man and we wish him the very best as he begins this new chapter abroad. We have no doubt that he will proudly uphold both the CPO and South African flags throughout his endeavours and we look forward to seeing the great heights that this young star shall reach,” says Nic.

The bubbly and Jordan are well matched.

Both are unique, and both are young or have youthful attributes and the bubbly which spent eight years on the lees, has a bright and clean elegance with great length on the palate. Le Lude’s maiden vintage is superb now and will last another 10 years!

On the programme in Jordan’s Gift  will be Tertia Visser-Downie and Gerhard Joubert (piano), the CPO’s Refiloe Olifant (violin) and cellist and CPO extra musician, Graham du Plessis. They will perform works by Sarasate, Vivaldi, Mendelssohn,  Dvorak and Ponce with a delightful rendition of Over the Rainbow.

PUB QUIZ

Thanks to double bass principal Roxane Steffen for compiling some fantastic pub quizzes over the past few months. Your last chance, for now at least, to join in the quiz is this week – Thursday at 7 pm on Zoom at this ID 707 805 8999.

Then you can tune in to FMR and hear the CPO’s rebroadcast of a concert conducted by Arjan Tien with soloist cellist Nicolas Altsteadt and Tchaikovsky Variations on a Rococo Theme and Rachmaninov Symphony no 2 in E minor. It was first broadcast in 2011.

The next concert features the Amici Quartet of Suzanne Martens and Petrus de Beer (violins),  Karin Gaertner (viola) and Peter Martens (cello) with pianist Megan-Geoffrey Prins. It is being recorded at Old Nectar in Stellenbosch and will stream from 15:30 with the recital beginning at 16:00 on August 2. On the programme are Schumann’s Piano Quintet and Dvořák’s Piano Quintet no. 2.

NEWS FROM THE BOARD ROOM

The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra accepts with sorrow the resignation of Advisory Board member David Bloomberg, whose has taken a new trusteeship which will take up most of his time. In acknowledging the time he has generously given to the CPO, Board chairman Derek Auret noted that his valued contribution will be missed.

GOOD NEWS!

  *   The CPO was awarded the title as Most Renowned Professional Orchestra 2020 in the  2020 African Excellence Awards hosted by MEA Markets. It’s wonderful to know that what we strive for is being noticed outside of our home town. Thank you, MEA Markets
  *   The TSIBA Business School’s webinar on music entrepreneurship and partnership with the CPO/CPYO was supported by many and we thank all the donors. Thank you TSIBA for this collaboration to support all our youth initiatives, since we share the same values – creating a career path for those formerly without access.
  *   Congratulations to Uliana Alexeev, an incredible young violist (and the daughter of guest concertmaster Farida Bacharova), who has been awarded a scholarship by the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival to spend 10 days at Volkswang Hochschüle in Essen, Germany, being mentored by Alissa Margulis and Gareth Lubbe.
