Dear Residents,
What’s happening next week 22/01/2018 – 28/01/2018
We would like to wish the following residents a Happy Birthday: Marion Thompson (Unit 39) on 22nd; Haydn Jones (Unit 47) and Clive Prowse (Unit 62) on the 27th.
Our Social Dinner on Tuesday, 23 January is at 6:30pm in the Clubhouse. We will be serving a choice of Chicken schnitzel with a mushroom sauce on buttered tagliatelle & green vegetables OR Classic lasagne topped with rosa tomatoes with salad & garlic bread. This will be followed by Peach melba & coffee/tea. You are welcome to reserve your own table of six/eight for the evening. We kindly request that you book at reception or call Ext 300. Booking and payment is required by no later than 12pm on Monday, 22 January. Unfortunately, no late bookings can be accepted and there will be no refund in the event of a no-show.
The Clubhouse Bistro is open for lunch, Monday to Friday from 10:30 – 2:30pm, except on Tuesdays. No booking required. Yvonne Whitford will serve many favourites including an all-day breakfast, light lunches and salads as well as toasted sandwiches. For the sweet tooth, a cake of the day will be offered plus a limited selection of hot and cold beverages.
Robert Burns was a Scottish Poet and lyricist. He is widely known as the national Poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. Our theme evening, Burns Night, on Friday, 26 January will celebrate both Scotland and Robbie Burns. The starter is a traditional haggis, cheese balls with cranberry dipping sauce and mini fishcakes with a sweet chilli dipping sauce. This will be followed by Beef Steak Pie with puff pastry OR Hake & Haddock Pie served with roast potatoes & traditional vegetables. Dessert is a delightful Scotch Sherry Trifle & tea/coffee. Please book with Andréa on Ext 300 by Tuesday, 23 January. Cost: R165 per person.
Our Movie night will take place on Saturday, 27 January at 7pm. Victoria & Abdul - Abdul Karim (Ali Azar) arrives from India to participate in Queen Victoria's (Judy Dench) golden jubilee. As Victoria questions the constrictions of her long-held position, the two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance that her household and inner circle try to destroy. As their friendship deepens, the queen begins to see a changing world through new eyes, joyfully reclaiming her humanity. You are welcome to bring your own refreshments. Please contact Elda Diana-Oliaro on Ext 155 for any additional information.
Forth coming events:
- TED Talk - a funny account of Suspicious emails will be held on Wednesday, 14 January at 10h30. Unclaimed insurance bonds, diamond-encrusted safe deposit boxes, close friends marooned in a foreign country. They pop up in our inboxes, and standard procedure is to delete on sight. But what happens when you reply? Follow along as writer and comedian James Veitch narrates a hilarious, weeks-long exchange with a spammer who offered to cut him in on a hot deal. This talk was presented at an official TED conference. Please contact Andréa on Ext 300 and confirm your attendance for seating purposes.
- Our first Men’s Breakfast in 2018 will take place on Thursday, 1 February so please diarise this date.
- Note: The music evenings arranged by Herman Poelmann are cancelled until further notice.
In addition, Bergvliet village has adopted Operation SMILE as our charity drive for 2018. We will be raising funds by collecting plastic bottle caps or plastic bread ties, to change the lives of children who are born with a cleft palate, the fourth most common birth defect in the world. Every kilogram of plastic collected will be recycled and the money raised will go towards paying for the surgery the beneficiaries need. Each operation costs about R5500.00. A jar will be placed in reception and we appeal to you to drop in plastic lids and ties whenever you can. Elda Diana-Oliaro is our SMILE champion and will deliver the collected plastic items to Operation Smile drop off points throughout the year
And lastly, Cape Town will implement Level 6B water restrictions on 1 February as the drought continues to dry up the City. This means that the daily consumption per person per household has been cut to 50 Litres.
Have a lovely weekend!
