[Zsd-news] Telkom 10 digit dialling

Hello All

Please note that Telkom is moving over to "10 digit" dialling.  In the  
future, to dial a Cape Town phone number from a telephone located 
in Cape Town, you will have to dial "021" before the number - even 
though it is a local number.

This is all related to the introduction of the new "Second Network 
Operator" (SNO) when Telkom's monopoly expires.  The new 10 
digit dialling is already active.  It is not clear when the old method of 
dialling local numbers will stop working, but it could be as soon as 
May this year.

Please change the setup on your computer do dial the area prefix 
before your internet access phone number.  The easiest way to do 
this is on Windows 98 is to:

-   Click on "start" and open "Program" "Accessories"
    "Communication" "Dial-up Networking". 

-   Right click on the icon for you internet connection and select
    properties. 

-   If there is a tick in the box "Use area code and dialling
    properties", clear it. 

-   Edit the telephone number in the "Telephone Number" box to a
    valid 10 digit number complete with area code. 

-   Users with "Capetonian" accounts should be dialling
    "0216838820".  Users with "Roadrunner", "Universe" or ISDN
    accounts that dial directly into SAIX should dial "0860007249"
    (Calls to this number are charged at local call charges from
    anywhere in South Africa). 

The above applies to Windows 98.  Other Operating Systems, such 
as Windows 95, Windows 2000 or Windows XP will have slightly 
different menu's.  If you need assistance please contact ZSD.

If you have somebody who assists you with your computer support, 
please ask them to do the above changes at the next convenient 
opportunity.  It will only take a few minutes and it can be done at any 
time.

Customers who connect via leased lines or "Zslic" servers are not 
effected by this.  All Zslic servers under maintenance contracts 
have already been changed to use the new phone numbers.
