<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">restricted the spread of COVID-19 at all of our national retirement villages.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif"> <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">However last week we reported that positive COVID-19 cases were confirmed at Evergreen Muizenberg.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">The highly contagious nature of this virus has resulted in 14 positive cases to date. The positive cases
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">identified are restricted to 2 frail care residents, 10 health care workers and 2 members of staff.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">Unfortunately, one of our frail care residents developed severe symptoms and needed to be transferred to
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">Constantiaberg Mediclinic, where he is currently recovering very well. While he is not “out of the woods” yet,
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">we are hopeful for a full recovery.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">Our second frail care resident is asymptomatic and has shown absolutely no symptoms. The resident remains

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">in our frail care facility and is being cared for under strict barrier nursing protocols, by dedicated nursing staff
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">who are isolated solely to this patient’s care. We have specifically laboured this point so that you can all rest
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">assured that we are very focussed on containing the virus.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">Moving on to our health care workers, the advice of the Department of Health is very clear that healthcare workers<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">who test positive are required to self-isolate away from the retirement village. This advice is imperative and
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">intended to protect vulnerable elderly residents along with all other health care workers in the village from
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">becoming infected by this highly contagious virus.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">When the Evergreen Muizenberg care workers were individually advised that they had tested positive for the virus,
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">they were each understandably shocked and highly emotional at the sudden news of their test results.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">In the emotion of the moment, several care workers elected to self-isolate at home. This was clearly ill-advised,
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">given that most of our health care workers reside in residential structures that are not conducive to self-isolation,
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">thus placing their family members and their community at large, at risk of infection too.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">In hindsight, we realise that more should have been done by our Management team, to help our carers assimilate
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">the test results and to fully understand the options available to them. We regret this oversight and realise that the
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">situation should have been handled much better. Post this experience, substantial remedial training for our
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">Management team has taken place. In addition, all of our existing health care workers have received counselling
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">and advice on what to expect in the event of a positive test result.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">We were fortunate to have the assistance and support of local social worker Lorraine Moka and government MP,
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">Advocate Hishaam Mohamed, who helped us to relocate the affected workers to a Western Cape government
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">isolation centre, 35km away from Evergreen Muizenberg. As matters stand right now, 7 carers are recovering in
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">the designated isolation centre and 3 carers are recovering at home in appropriate self-isolation accommodation, as they
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">live alone. We are delighted to advise that they are all recovering well, displaying no symptoms, and are in good spirits.

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">We regret any stress experienced by our health care workers and look forward to welcoming them all back into our

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma",sans-serif">village upon their full recovery from this virus. In fact, this is anticipated to be in approximately 10 days’ time.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
