        Dear Resident,

In the past few weeks a number of residents have either been scammed of some of their money
or have had attempts at scamming them. Even criminals feel the pressure of a tough economy,
so they too are designing new strategies, and working hard towards scamming you of your money

This is now in the form of an initial exploratory telephone call. This is basically called 'Vishing', a
combination of 'voice' and 'phishing' - it is a phone scam designed to get you to share personal information,
like account numbers and passwords, by pretending to be a trusted source.

Never provide your any of your personal details without good reason, and never to an unknown party.

Common vishing scams

  *   'Compromised' bank or credit card account
  *   Unsolicited loan or investment offers
  *   Medical aid scam
  *   SARS or tax scam
  *   False job offers

How to spot a vishing scam



  *   The caller claims to represent a trusted source, like your insurance company and your bank.

          It is very seldom that these institutions will make telephonic contact with you.

  *   A frantic sense of urgency on their part, designed to make you panic and hand over information without

asking questions

  *   The caller asks you for your personal information like name, address, birth date, ID number, etc.

They can seem legitimate and already have some of your personal information at hand


Ways to protect yourself

  *   Don't answer unknown numbers
  *   Hang up and block the number
  *   Don't press buttons or respond to prompts
  *   Verify the callers identity by calling back on a verified / known number
  *   Download a call screening app like 'Truecaller'
