Dear Resident,

What’s happening this week & next: 13 to 22 November

What a wonderful week it was last week, the Springboks returned to an unprecedented welcome, the country was celebrating and for a while we forgot about some of the negatives of our wonderful country. I know it sometimes becomes easy to get negative about South Africa, we have so much to be positive about………………….I will list a few…..

  * South Africa cares! It’s true. Despite our reputation for crime and violence, the average South African cares so much that 88% of us give donations of our money or time to charitable organisations. As individuals we donate R19-billion each year.
  * South Africa has it all! With our massive cultural, geographical and biological diversity and natural beauty, we are home to eight world heritage sites, from the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park to the Vredefort Dome in North West Province.
  * Development. Since the first democratic government was elected in 1994, more than 3 million houses have been built
  * Everyone loves our wine! Over 420.2 million litres of South African wines were sold offshore in the last 12 months, a slight decrease from the previous 12 months. This is despite a global economic slowdown and gloomy forecasts for the wine trade in general.
  * We have world-class writers. Nadine Gordimer and JM Coetzee have both won the most coveted literature prizes in the world: The Nobel prize for literature and the Booker prize. Not to mention Andre Brink, Alan Paton, Breyten Breytenbach and Deon Meyer.
  * We are going green fast! After 13 years of research by the University of Johannesburg’s Professor Vivian Alberts, South Africa can boast solar panels made from a unique metal alloy that converts light into energy at a fraction of the usual cost. The aim is to produce 450 000 solar panels every year.
It was great to see such a good turnout of our Remembrance Day service, residents looked very ‘official’ in their military attire and medals. A special thanks to Hugh Till for a lovely service and to Louis and Stephanie de Haas for the heartfelt personal remembrance speeches, the emotion was noticeable.
I still have the ‘Poppy Day’ donation tin, so those who still want to donate please do so. The money collected goes to the South African Legion, this organisation addresses the needs of ex-service personnel and their dependents by way of housing, pensions, employment and general welfare. It is apolitical, non-sectarian, non-racial, non-sexist and non-partisan. A very worthy cause.

The ladies involved in our Annual Evergreen Muizenberg Craft Market with be handing the money collected and ‘goodies’ bought to Belinda Abrahams, SPCA communications office, at 9 am on Tuesday 26 November. Those interested please attend the handing over.

Not only is November, Movember month, which highlights Men’s Health it is also Diabetes Awareness month. In South Africa, it is estimated that 3.85 million South Africans suffer from diabetes, with many remaining undiagnosed. Type 2 diabetes can be treated when diagnosed early. If left untreated, warns Mediclinic Vergelegen endocrinologist Dr Elmo Pretorius, it can lead to kidney damage, heart disease and even stroke. “Diabetes is a silent disease,” says Dr Pretorius. “You may not know you have it or think it’s not serious. But in the background, it’s causing damage to your blood vessels, and that can lead to a heart attack, stroke, renal failure, blindness – you could even lose a limb.”

In short, go and have yourself tested. We are sponsoring FREE diabetes testing in our clinic on the 1st floor until the end of November.

We would like to wish the following residents a very Happy Birthday:

A special wish to our trio of octogenarians, all on the same day, Friday 15th, may you have many many more years with us at Evergreen.

Coming up in the next week:-

  * The Movie tonight is the very recent and entertaining Rocketman, released earlier this year. Rocketman is a biographical musical film based on the life of musician Elton John, one of the greatest entertainers of our time. Movie starts at 6pm at the TV Lounge.

Synopsis - Young Reginald Dwight changes his name to Elton John and collaborates with singer-songwriter Bernie Taupin to become one of the most iconic figures in pop history. Set to his most beloved songs, it's the epic musical story of Elton John, his breakthrough years in the 1970s and his fantastical transformation from shy piano prodigy to international superstar.

  * Bingo on Thursday 14 November. A nominal fee of R30.00 is payable, which goes towards prizes and catering. Please book by Wednesday and pay at reception. All welcome……we encourage our new residents to join for a great evening.

  * Our ‘special trip’ in November is on Friday 15th to the NSRI Base Station in Hout Bay. Some of you attended Tanya Meth’s interesting talk on the work that the NSRI does. You will now have a chance to visit a station to see live what it all entails. The trip will take a scenic route through Constantia to Hout Bay, do the tour and then have lunch in Hout Bay. Promises to be another lovely trip. Please book at Reception, price R40.00 per person for transport, only 2 seats left.

  * On Thursday 14th we welcome one of our Noordhoek residents, Dr. Brian Hambleton-Jones, who will give us a talk “Climate change, volcanoes, earthquakes and cosmology”. Born in Kenya in 1941, the young Brian moved to South Africa with his parents when he was seven. He went to school in Johannesburg and has been fascinated by rocks for as long as he can remember. After studying Geology at the University of Cape Town and doing his DSc at Pretoria (Tuks), he spent 27 years working for what is today the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA) as a nuclear geologist. As Brian says “you are welcome, so come and take part, to hear what others are not telling you”

  * Edit Microsystems are with us on Thursday 19th, they are a leading supplier of assistive technology solutions in Southern Africa. Find out how modern technology can improve your experience of daily tasks like reading, writing, using your mobile phone, computing and more. This will take place at the TV Area

  Village General

  * Now in its fourth year, we are asking residents to donate foods stuffs for those children that rely on the school, Capricorn Primary School, for their daily meals. With the school closed for the holidays the one decent meal per day is now not available. The aim is to feed 150 families for the six weeks that the school is closed. A box has been placed in the foyer with a list of the recommended food for you to put your donation in. No matter how small and insignificant you might think something is, anything will help. A BIG thank you to those of you who have already donated.

  * Remember that the City of Cape Town grants a rates rebate for those residents on a pension or social grant. Those of you who earn a household income of less than R 17 500 are eligible to receive a rebate of up to 100% of your rates. You are encouraged to apply, don’t delay, close off date is 30 November. Reception will print the forms for you and David Rosenberg, apartment 115, has kindly offered to assist anyone who might need help in completing the forms.

  * The Garden Committee, “the Greenies” is taking shape, thank you to those who have volunteered, Ruth Reichlin, Billie Wood and Ursula Law. I am looking very forward to our first harvest, completely organic. With the help of Nigel and his team the Garden Committee will not only oversee this but all public gardens and grassed areas in the village.

  * A big shout out to all residents to volunteer to be “Evacuation Marshals”. We need six marshals on each apartment floor and six marshals for the houses. You will be trained into exactly what you are required to do. We will be holding a meeting with each group.

  * A reminder to please let the office know when you leave and when you return to the village for any medical procedures. We do not always know when you leave the village, it is vitally important, not only from a safety point of view but also from a medical and healthcare point. We need to know what transpired so we are able to put a healthcare plan together.

Warm Regards
Derek
