Stack Burn Notification

We would like to alert residents that we will be conducting a stack burn on the main island on the lake to reduce biomass in a safe manner.

The burning operation is scheduled to take place during winter months. The dates for the burning operation have not been confirmed and will depend on favourable weather conditions which can only be determined closer to the time. The burning operation will take place over 4-5 days. The fire will be extinguished each day as per the permit conditions.

The required burning permit has been submitted to the City of Cape Town Health Department's Air Pollution Control Section for approval.

Residents are advised to close all windows while the burning operation is underway. The Home Owners Association will inform the local community of the proposed burn dates via a notification that will be published in the False Bay Echo.   Further to this, notices communicating the proposed burn dates will be distributed to residents.  All direct neighbours of the estate will be informed via a letter to those identified of the intent to burn.

Lake Michelle is surrounded by natural fynbos vegetation. Controlled burning operations are necessary to reduce biomass, stimulate growth of indigenous vegetation and reduce the risk of uncontrolled wildfires.  The controlled burn is specifically low risk as the fire would need to cross the waterbody to affect any structures. The planned burn would pose a minimal hazard or nuisance to human health, safety, private property and the environment.

Mini fire breaks will be cleared around each brush pile or group of brush piles to limit any movement of fire to adjacent areas on the island.
