NO VENUE RESTRICTIONS

The smiles all around at last week’s concert said it all – no masks and more tickets available for sale. We know there are some who are still cautious and more comfortable to be socially distanced but since we do not expect a full house immediately there will be space to move. Tickets will be on sale again at the door but the no-cash rule will remain for ALL City Hall concerts. We have SnapScan and Yoko for credit cards, and the EFT details will also be available if you wish to pay electronically.

This concert on Thursday will be the last one with an electronic programme – from the FOM gala we will be printing programmes again and while cash isn’t a problem at Artscape we can only accept SnapScan or Yoco for them at the City Hall .

FINAL WINTER SYMPHONY CONCERT AND THE ORGAN

James Jones is the soloist in the final Winter Symphonies at the City Hall concert on Thursday.

 Jimmy has taken the City Hall organ to heart because he says “this Norman and Beard organ is one of the finest examples of what a symphonic instrument should be” and that he is talking with his “organ buddies in the States who are very curious about it”.  The organ deserves to be rebuilt while retaining its original character. Let’s hold thumbs that this becomes a reality.

The concert, on July 12, 2022, at Artscape at 19:30 will be conducted by the CPO’s principal guest conductor Bernhard Gueller, and features two international stars, Dutch/English violinist Daniel Rowland and Serbian cellist Maja Bogdanovic.  The charismatic couple will perform the Brahms Double Concerto, which is a work they both love and love especially performing it with each other.

It would be wonderful to have a full house of 1500 people. Tickets are on sale now at Dial-A-Seat on 021 421 7695 at Computicket online and at Checkers outlets. This is a concert that will remain with you for years.

The dress rehearsal will not be open, but there will be a pre-concert talk by Albert Combrink at 18:45 next to the opera bar.

The concert will begin with the overture from La Forza del destino by Verdi and conclude with the firecracker, the Symphony no 5 by Beethoven.

FOM is looking to have all the musicians sponsored and your name will go next to that of the musician in the programme. Options are from R400 up and there are only a few spots available. The programme is in design so hurry and call Ruth on 082 292 4565.

After a break of two years without a public live performance, another sparkling Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra Community Spectacular concert is back on the boards at Artscape to a house without audience limits!  Brandon Phillips will be on the podium with an array of South African entertainers headlined by The One Who Sings, Zolani Mahola, and Katlego Maboe who will also be the master of ceremonies. The concert will take place at Artscape on Saturday, July 16, at 20:00 and is supported by the City of Cape Town.

This year the CPO is  happy to present singers Katlego Maboe, Lynelle Kenned, Paxton Fielies, Sarah Theron, Zoë Modiga and Corneil Muller with violinists David Bester and Corban Beukes, the Zip Zap Circus, and dancers, Jazzart and Unmute.

The director is Aviva Pelham, Stefan Lombard is musical director and Louis Heyneman the producer, a team that has successfully brought previous concerts to the public.

SPRING SEASON BACK TO NORMAL

We haven’t finalised the Spring Symphonies at the City Hall season but we can leak a little …. Jordan Brooks will be the soloist in the Sibelius Violin Concerto with Bernhard Gueller on the podium on September 1 and the next two concerts on September 15 and 22 will be directed by Belgian conductor Rik Ghesquière. Soloists are the Belgian violinist Jolente De Maeyer and in the final concert we will be giving the premiere of a new triple concerto written by Tim Kliphuis with Kliphuis (violin), Peter Martens (cello), and Charl du Plessis (piano).

The new open house means that we can reintroduce the traditional subscriptions … those who subscribed in January 2020 will be able to claim those seats once more. Some of you have indicated changes and those have been noted. As soon as Computicket has finalised the bookings, we will offer traditional subscribers a two-week window to resubscribe.

Dial-A-Seat will do its best to accommodate all changes and also new subscribers. The CPO will do its best to retain seats for just ONE season for those who chose not to renew in September but wait until the next season in October/November. As in the past, we cannot keep seats for more than one season.

MADIBA DAY CONCERT / MASIDLALE INGOMA

In the spirit of Madiba Day on July 18, a group of young Masidlale musicians will give 67 minutes of music in remembrance of the giant South African.  Let’s Play a Song will be their way of giving back to the community in Lingelethu Community Centre in Khayelitsha. Masidlale has invited members from the Ikamva Lethu Senior Citizens Centre in Harare Khayelitsha and members from the Gugulethu Older People’s Forum to join them. The aim of this concert is to bridge the generational gap by taking classical music to people in the townships.

Sharing the stage with the Masidlale musicians will be African traditional music artist, Nomapostile Nyiki and the Gugulethu Older People’s Forum Choir. These performances will celebrate the music genre the audience know and love, while the Masidlale performers will introduce the audience to new sounds and the classic music genre.

“I have always wanted to perform for the elderly in our communities, it is very rare to find our grandparents in theatres and taking the music to them is such a beautiful gesture” says Nomapostile Nyiki.

This concert will have a significant impact on all members involved as it is will not only educate the elderly about classical music but will also allow Masidlale learners to interact with the elderly of the community in a safe space, says Nolizwi Monica Dadase, interim Masidlale manager. “We hope that after this performance learners will start visiting senior citizen clubs in their communities more often.”

Busiswe Tunywashe of the Ikamva Lethu Senior Citizen Centre underscores that. “The reason why this event is important for our members is that most of the time seniors are abused by their grandchildren. Having this intergenerational event will build a healthy bond between youth and the seniors."

The concert will take place at 12:30 on Monday July 18 at the Lingelethu Community Centre in Khayelitsha and is sponsored by the City of Cape Town.

Six young men and women will have a master class with Maestro Arjan Tien on Thursday, August 4, before the judging for a place in the finals takes place the following day with Tien, Bernhard Gueller, Richard Cock, Brandon Phillips, Chad Hendricks and Louis Heyneman. The panel will also sit in on the rehearsals with the CPO before the final round on Sunday, August 7, 2022, at 18:00. The semi-finalists are Jason Atherton, Dane Coetzee, Jacobus de Jager, Reghardt Kuhn, Meike-Marie Kunz and Chevonne Plaatjies.

Each will conduct an overture (Weber Der Freischutz; Beethoven Coriolan or Mozart Magic Flute) and one movement from Mozart Clarinet Concerto/Piano Concerto K 466 or Mendelssohn Violin Concerto). The soloists will be named shortly.

THE CPYO ANNUAL GALA

Beethoven Symphony No 5 is the main work on the programme for this gala concert, which will be conducted by Brandon Phillips on Saturday, August 13, at 19:30. The concert opens with the Pomp and Circumstance March by Elgar, and pianist Mike Wang will perform the Mendelssohn  Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor. Sales will open shortly at Quicket.

Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival

More evidence that concert life is back to normal is the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival which takes place from July 1. The CPO’s principal cello, Peter Martens, is managing director of the festival which also includes old friends such as Daniel Rowland who stays on to be a soloist in our FOM gala and Alissa Margulis who is due back with the CPO later this year. CPO musicians on the faculty include guest concertmasters Farida Bacharova and Suzanne Martens and Samantha Durrant. Bernhard Gueller is conducting the Festival Orchestra in Sibelius Symphony no 2 with soloists Wenzel Fuchs (Weber Clarinet Concerto) and the Beethoven Triple Concerto with Margulies, Kyril Zlotnikov (cello) and Luis Magalhaes (piano).
