Audiologists are trained in the science of hearing, balance, and related disorders. As one of the fastest growing fields in the United States, audiology is focused on providing diagnosis and treatment for hearing loss.

Currently, hearing loss is the third most common physical condition in the United States, after heart disease and arthritis.

Hearing loss has the potential to affect a wide range of areas in a person's life. In terms of cognitive ability, untreated hearing loss tends to have adverse effects and has been linked to an increased risk of dementia due to the cognitive burden it puts on the brain. Untreated hearing loss has been found to cause social isolation, and increase the risk of depression and anxiety.

Sashni Munnisunker, the Audiologist, is still seeing patients at the Care Centre, so make your booking today to see her.
She will be at the Care Centre again on Tuesday, 9 July 2019 from 9am to 1pm.

All appointments can be made with Sipho on ext. 220 or directly with the Audiologist on the below details:

It's the start of July. And that means it's time for the next photographic theme for 2019.

MORE ABOUT THE COLOUR RED:
Red is a warm and positive, associated with physicality and our will to survive. Strong, powerful and energizing, red excites the emotions and motivates us to take action. It is pioneering and shows leadership qualities, promoting ambition and determination. It is also strong-willed and gives confidence to those who are shy.

REMEMBER
For 2019 we're looking for new subjects. You can photograph anything you want, as long as they're not plants or animals. The two most important rules are that it must be your own photo, and you can enter only one each month. Each month's entries close at midnight on the last day of the month.

HOW TO ENTER
Send your entries to photos at evergreenlifestyle.co.za<mailto:photos at evergreenlifestyle.co.za>

Happy snapping!

Why not Ditch the Plastic Bags and go Plastic-Free for July?

The revolution against single-use plastic has been gaining momentum around the world, and while many might feel like they want to join in, it can be daunting when you start thinking about how to reduce your use in reality.

As a personal challenge, the idea is to refuse single-use plastic for the month, like straws, coffee cups, grocery bags and more.

There's also a handy quiz<https://yahoo.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8b12069f22811066e10f8e4f2&id=12e0596769&e=1eeca1566a> to help spot other pesky single-use plastics you might have never heard of like tea bags, which contain polypropylene to retain the bag's shape and does not decompose. You can either opt to buy loose leaf tea or do a little research on which companies use plastic-free tea bags.

These are some of the simple steps you can start with:
Refuse plastic straws.
Use reusable plastic bags.
Avoid pre-packed bread, vegetables and fruit.
Don't buy plastic water bottles.
Shop for smarter disposable nappies.
Line bins with newspaper instead of plastic bags.
Buy pet food that comes in paper bags or tins.

But one of the biggest challenges in South Africa is finding cost-effective means to refuse single-use plastic, as 'green' grocery stores are normally not too affordable. Interestingly enough, Pick n Pay has just launched 'nude zones' or plastic free fruit and veg sections<https://yahoo.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8b12069f22811066e10f8e4f2&id=63307757e7&e=1eeca1566a> in 13 stores in a bid to be more eco-friendly.

However, just doing what you can will help create a more sustainable future, and perhaps after the month is over it will become life-long habits!

Africa is Leading the World in Banning the Plastic Bag!

It's not often the African continent leads the free, first world. But when it comes to breaking free from plastic, the mother continent is leading the world in plastic bag regulations.

Out of the 31 countries that have placed bans on plastic bags, South Africans can be proud that the Southern part of the continent is leading charge, according to a National Geographic<https://yahoo.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8b12069f22811066e10f8e4f2&id=d9a91a0485&e=1eeca1566a> report.

Business Tech<https://yahoo.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8b12069f22811066e10f8e4f2&id=c52a999a44&e=1eeca1566a> reports that overall though SA is winning the war on plastics as popular retailers commit to eradicating single use plastics. South Africa's pollution due to broken plastic bags lining streets and blowing aimlessly along fences, caused some to jokingly call it our fake national flower. Yet back in 2004, we implemented a plastic bag levy, including regulating the thickness of single-use plastics as a means to combat the growing pollution problem they create.

The World Economic Forum<https://yahoo.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8b12069f22811066e10f8e4f2&id=6449e2c800&e=1eeca1566a> details that as of 1 June, travelers to Tanzania will have to pack very carefully, as the country announced the implementation<https://yahoo.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8b12069f22811066e10f8e4f2&id=92c99c7e1d&e=1eeca1566a> of the second phase of its plastic bag ban on 16 May.

Similarly, Kenya's efforts, initiated in 2017, is leading to cleaner country too.

In Kenya, the penalties for ignoring the ban are said to be the world's most punitive. At $38,000 in fines or four years in prison, it has seen resistance, and enforcement said to be inconsistent. But in a country that once "used about 100 million plastic bags a year", according to UN estimates, the reduction efforts are notable and seem to be effective.

But it's not only the unsightly issues caused by the plastic that desperately need to be dealt with, it's the aftereffects, especially on marine life - that sees the ramping up of banning single-use plastics and straws as a much-needed conservation trend across the African continent.

COL'CACCHIO'S CANNABIS PIZZA IS TASTY, BUT MISSES THE HIGH POINT
The new chicken and vegetarian additions are delicious. But they don't make you feel high.

Col' Cacchio's 'Not A Very Plain Jane' pizza which is sprayed with CBD oil. Image: Xanderleigh Dookey

Popular Italian Restaurant Col'Cacchio said its restaurants that serve its new cannabis pizzas have been full since its launch on Tuesday.

The pizza offers CBD oil on two specialty pizzas, which caters for both vegetarian and meat-eating customers. After the toppings are applied to the dough in the kitchen, they are baked in a clay, wood-heated oven.

The pizzas then have CBD oil (which is extracted from cannabis) sprayed on to the hot pizza. The oil has no traces of THC - the chemical responsible for psychoactive reactions. The restaurant says CBD oil is used because it's the chemical that provides the best health benefits from cannabis.

Owner of the Nicolway Branch in Bryanston, Roz Mommsen, told Eyewitness News innovation was always associated with technology - but adding CBD to pizzas was their way of being innovative. Addressing any misconceptions, the restaurant stressed that customers can't get high on the pizza.

CBD oil manufacturer Africanpure partnered with Col'Cacchio to supply the CBD oil used on the pizzas. The company's co-founder, Mike Saunders, says the most immediate effect someone might feel from eating the pizza is a sense of calm.

There are two flavors of the pizza: The Not So Plain Mary-Jane is the meat option, topped with peri-peri chicken and a creamy avocado sauce, which will set you back R 140. The vegetarian option comes in the form of the Green Goddess, with baby marrow and basil, which costs R 125. Customers can opt to have CBD oil sprayed on any of the restaurant's dishes at an additional charge of R 25.
